Obituary

Millinocket – Joanna Perry Santerre, wife of the late Richard J. Santerre, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 16, 2019 at Millinocket Regional Hospital at age 92. She was born September 13, 1927 in Milinocket and was the sixth of eight children born to Hazel M. (Curren) Perry and James R. Perry, Sr.
Growing up in Millinocket, Joanna loved being part of a large and musically talented family. She and her sister, Jackie, spent many an hour harmonizing as they went about their daily chores. Her most treasured times were spent at family get togethers and many a happy time was had at the Perry camp at Smith Pond singing and playing Pitch. Her singing voice was apparent until the end.
She graduated from Stearns High School in 1946 and always enjoyed her class reunions. She moved into Sweet Seniors in East Millinocket in October of 2015. There, she received wonderful care and enjoyed the other residents as well. Joanna was a long time member of Christ the Divine Mercy Parish and the Daughters of Isabella.
As a younger woman she enjoyed being a member of the Millinocket Players. She and daughter, Kathy, went on 19 of the 20 Mystery Tours organized by Nancy DeWitt. She was still plowing her own driveway at age 87. Joanna was a hard worker and was employed by various small businesses in the community. She finished her working career at Millinocket Regional Hospital starting in the mid 70’s and retiring in 1989.
She is survived by a daughter, Kathy Healey and her husband Philip; a granddaughter, Shannon Healey of Eddington; grandson, Justin Healey and fiancé Rebecca St. John and her son, Peytyn, of Caribou; a brother, Byron “Barney” Perrry and his wife Shirley; sisters in law Mary Ann St. Peter and her husband Harold; Ernestine Quackenbush and her husband Harold; Rena Hughes and her husband Albert; Irene Tapley, Florence “Flossie” Picard, and Mary Santerre; brothers in law Ernest Santerre and his wife Anne, and Joseph Santerre and his wife Pat; and many precious nieces and nephews and their children.
In addition to her husband, Joanna was predeceased by a 10 month old daughter, Susan Jane Bossie; sisters Kathryn Leach, Jacquelyn Brooks and her husband Raymond, Mary Jane Hughes and her husband Roland; brothers James Perry, Jr., and his wife Pauline, Paul Perry, and Wilbur “Wib” Perry and his wife Pat; Santerre sisters in law Dorothy “Dot” Raymond and her husband Philip, and Verna Charette and her husband Guy; and Santerre brothers in law, Frederick and his wife Lorena, Delphis, Clarence, Roland “Babe” Beaulieu, Alfred Picard, and Wallace Tapley.
Friends are invited to visit with the family 10 – 11 AM Monday, October 21 at Christ the Divine Mercy Parish, St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church, 19 Colby Street, Millinocket, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 AM with the Rev. Bruce Siket, pastor, presider. Interment will be at the Millinocket Cemetery. Gifts in memory of Joanna may be sent to the Katahdin Area Support Group, P.O. Box 374, Millinocket, ME 04462. Arrangements are by Lamson Funeral Home, Millinocket.

We (Joan Hanington & Sweet Seniors) will miss Joanna and her voice. She was already to sing with us every Sunday, one of her favorite songs was "Open up your Hear and let the sun (Son) shine in", at times she would even sing it by herself. She always loved to see if she could hold a note longer than I could. She had a great time and great smile. She still had a good voice. My condolences to the family as well as Joan's. When they leave Sweet Seniors they always take a piece of our heart with them. Bruce Leavitt

Dear Kathy, Phil and Family, My sincerest heartfelt sympathies for the loss of your wonderful Mother. She was always so very pleasant and kind each time I met her from high school until just a couple of years ago when we last met. Her positive demeanor never faltered. Know that she is rejoicing with song in the heavens with others who have led and lighted her way. Gaile

Kathy & Family, so very sorry for your loss. I just sent your mom a card last week! I loved it when she and Dick got together with my brother Reggie and sang all those old songs. Will remember them both always. Sending prayers your way. 🙏

Oh Aunt Jo, the memories we have shared. ♡♡♡♡♡ Smith Pond, the afternoon naps you used to make me take in order to go swimming in the afternoon. The love, Oh the love you gave...what a blessing to have you in my and my children's lives. My second Mother, I love you forever and my heart is happy for you to cross over and hug Susan as you have waited so long. Give everyone love from us down here. What a glorious musical reunion you all must be having. Save a place for us. ♡♡♡♡♡
