Obituary for Thelma Joan Burgoyne (Smith)

Howland – Thelma J. Burgoyne, wife of the late Roscoe Burgoyne, passed away Sunday, August 11, 2019 at a Howland health care facility, after spending her last day on earth at her family’s camp on Cold Stream Pond, eating red hot dogs, chocolate pie, and making memories. She was born December 3, 1936 in Old Town, the daughter of Manley H. and Thelma P. (Haskell) Smith, Sr.

Joan grew up in Old Town, and was a graduate of Old Town High School, class of 1955. She was a military wife for over 20 years while her husband served in Vietnam, Japan, and Korea, and several tours stateside, and considered herself to have served as well, making her contribution in the maintaining of the home and raising the family. She worked at Penobscot Valley Hospital for many years as a CNA. Joan will be remembered as a loving mother and grandmother, a devoted wife, and loyal friend.

She is survived by five children, Catherine Sue Mattson and her husband Richard, Julie Ann McKechnie and her husband Glen, Kevin Ross Burgoyne and his wife Stacey, Kimberly Jean McLaughlin and her husband Andrew, and Laura Michelle Ireland and her husband Tim; thirteen grandchildren, Christopher, Jennifer, Kevin, Jamie L., Jamie M., Brad, Richard Ross, Samuel Emery, Allison, Brady, Sara, Whitney, and Rebecca; eleven great grandchildren, Christina, Alyssa, Emily, Kaitlyn, Davis, Griffin, Kortney, Leine, Brad, Jr., Lyndsay, and Sydney; two great great grandchildren, Kaiden and Owen; two sisters, Dorothy Haverlock, Janet Campbell and her husband Merle; a sister in law, Mary Smith; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. In addition to her husband and parents, Joan was predeceased by her companion Richard Jameson, her brother, Manley H. Smith, Jr., a brother in law, James Haverlock, and a niece, Pamela Campbell.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the caregivers at Cummings Health Care for the attentive and thoughtful care given to Joan and the family during her time there.

Memorial services will be held 10 A.M. Friday, August 16, 2019 at the Lamson Funeral Home, Clay Chapel, 7 Lee Road, Lincoln, with the Rev. Regginal Adams officiating. Private interment will be at the Town Line Cemetery, West Enfield.
