Obituary

Lincoln – Richard Earnest Tolman, Jr., 80, passed away peacefully at his home on August 8, 2020. He was born September 9, 1939 to Blanche and Richard Tolman, Sr. He grew up in Lincoln Center, with his sister, Donna and two brothers, Blaine and Phillip. Upon graduation from high school, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corp and was stationed overseas with his unit performing reconnaissance. He served as the Maine State Marine Commandant. He was an active member of the American Legion Post #77 and he took great pride in honoring veterans in graveside committal services.
He drove truck and was a lumberman for his father through the 1970’s. In the 1980’s he was employed at the Great Northern Paper and he finished up his career at W.T. Gardner & Sons.
He was raised on a farm and always had a passion for horses, which he shared with his family. He bred and raised many Morgan foals with the Trails End Morgan prefix. He was a local farrier for show and corrective shoeing and covered most of the equine area above Bangor. Later in life, he picked up another equestrian accomplishment of team penning.
He was a quiet man but loved to talk about horses, as well as his Marine activities. He had a dry humor and hearty laugh when in the throes of a good joke or story.
Richard is survived by his children, Lori Tolman of Florida, Ryan Tolman of Bangor, Wade Tolman of South Carolina and Sue Oliver and her husband, Shane and predeceased by one daughter, Ashley Tolman. His grandchildren are Chad Tolman, Kyle Spinney, Kaeley Spinney, Scott Tolman, Michael Springer, Wade Tolman, Jr., Steven Springer, Brandon Springer, Kasie Kubera, Cheyenne and Gary Tolman, and Aaron Tolman, as well as many great grandchildren.
Richard is survived by his sister, Donna Lovett-Coffin and her husband, Ken; his brother, Blaine Tolman and his wife, Sandra; his brother, Phillip Tolman and wife, Betty. He has many nieces and nephews.
Richard is survived by his partner Arlene “Tony” Glidden, who lived with him for many years.
He is predeceased by his parents and grandson, Lance Tolman.
Friends are invited to visit with the family 6-8 PM Thursday, August 13 at the Lamson Funeral Home, Clay Chapel, 7 Lee Road, Lincoln. Graveside services, with military honors, will be held at the Lincoln Cemetery August 14, 2020 at 11 AM. In following pandemic guidelines, masks must be worn.

My sincere condolences to Dick's family, and to Tony. I had the pleasure of knowing Dick for many years through horses. He and I showed horses together several times. Dick was always a gentleman and a true lover of horses. I am so glad I stopped to see him just a few weeks before he passed. Rest in Peace, Dick, and keep riding through the fields of Heaven.
