Obituary for Richard Osgood
East Millinocket – Richard “Dick” Osgood, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend,
passed away peacefully on August 18, 2019, at Ross Manor in Bangor, following a devastating fall at his home.
Born in East Millinocket in 1930 and a graduate of Schenck High School, Dick served in
the U.S. Air Force in the Korean War. He was a proud employee of the Great Northern
Paper Company as a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers,
retiring in 1987. A man of utmost integrity and decency, Dick’s purpose in life was achieved in his
devotion to his family, especially to his children, grandchildren, and his most recent
great-grandchild, Everly Scott, evidenced in their bedside vigils for the past six weeks
as he was never left alone.
Dick is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Mary “Gally” Osgood, his daughter
Deborah Johansen and her husband Herluf and their daughter Kirsten and her husband
Mitchell of Yarmouth; his daughter Stephanie Osgood and her two children, daughter
Emily Rush of Bangor and her daughter Everly Scott and Jeremy Rush and his wife
Katie of Old Town; his son Richard J. Osgood and his wife Kimberly and their daughters
Risha and Kamiwun and son Addison of Dedham; his son Jeffry Osgood and his wife
Sandra and their son Alexander of Wickenburg, Arizona; his daughter Mary Kay Hallett
and her husband Mark and their son Aaron and daughter Abby of Hermon; his sister
Belle Clendening and her husband Gary of Hallowell; his brother Robert Osgood of Lee.
He was predeceased by his parents, Dwight and Verna Osgood, his brother Dwight Jr.,
his sister Theo, and his beloved son Scott.
Dick loved good food, card games, in particular cribbage (“Nothing to be ashamed of
when you’re beaten by the very best!”), horseshoes, his vegetable garden at his home
on Beech Street, hunting and fishing, Schenck Wolverines basketball, summer
vacations in Prince Edward Island, weekly visits to Little Italy in Millinocket, most
recently the “boys” at McDonald’s, his cat Moxie, and children of all ages, especially
babies. Many a baby was soothed to sleep on Dick’s shoulder. He loved music with
Frank Sinatra, Neil Diamond, and the Bee Gees among his favorites. His most special
times were holidays. Christmas at Grampy’s (or Bamp’s), Fourth of July lamb
barbecues, and a Thanksgiving table surrounded by family, his pride and joy, are
cherished memories.
He had great civic pride in his community having served on the East Millinocket School
Committee, and he always delighted in the accomplishments of anyone who hailed from
his hometown.
He will be profoundly missed, but the family is so grateful for having him for as long as
we did and for the values he modeled of generosity, kindness, and love. Dick’s highest
compliment to anyone was “he’s a good boy” or “she’s a good girl.” He himself was the
epitome of a good man. The very best.
The family would like to thank the staff at Ross Manor for their compassionate care of
Dad over these past weeks.
Per Dick’s wishes, there will be no services. Interment will be in the East Millinocket
Cemetery at a later date. Arrangements are by Lamson Funeral Home, East Millinocket.
