Obituary for Richard Lane
Richard Lane, 85, of Sherman, ME, passed away at home surrounded by his family on July 14, 2019. Richard was born June 14, 1934 to the late Norman and Myrtle (Dumphy) Lane. Richard could be recognized for miles around, through every nearby town, in his Paystar wheeler truck hauling pulp or, when work was done, in his prized 1976 Cadillac.
His lifelong passion for being behind the wheel of a truck began at age 15, when he held his first trucking job hauling cement from Thomaston, ME back to Sherman to build the Sherman bridge. He had the first hydraulic loader in town, but still took great pride in wielding a pulp hook well into his 70s. He spent much of his 70 years of driving truck alongside his father, brother George, and son, Keith. Many of those years he enjoyed working for H.C. Haynes and Robin Crawford and Sons.
In his younger years, Richard was drafted into the Army, and upon completing basic training at Fort Dix, he returned home to Sherman to care for his mother and seven younger siblings. He spent his life in Sherman with his “old lady”, wife and caretaker of 55 years, Dianne (McAvoy), and together they raised three children. Over the years, he enjoyed dancing on Saturday nights, “the music” on Thursdays, and splitting firewood after school with his grandson, Cole.
In addition to his parents he was predeceased by his siblings, Everett, George, Rodney and Beverly.
He is survived by his wife, Dianne; his children and their spouses, Keith and Shelley, Norma and Joe, and Carol and Denise; four grandchildren, Shelbe and husband, Kaleb, Cole, Victoria and Matthew; brothers Philip, Ralph, Charles, Douglas, and Terry, and their families, including his many nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be held at 10am Thursday, July 18th at the Calvary Baptist Church in Stacyville, followed by a service at 11am, with graveside service and luncheon to follow. Tribute donations in his memory may be given to the Alzheimer’s Association of Maine, 383 US Route One #2C, Scarborough, ME 04074, to further their vision of a world without Alzheimer’s Disease.
