Obituary for Richard "Dick" Day
MEDWAY - Richard “Dick“ Day, Sr. left us all too soon on June 19, 2020 at home surrounded by his loving family. He was born on February 14, 1945 in Medway, to Harold “Buster” and Linnette (Fogg) Day.
Dick grew up in Medway with a strong work ethic instilled in him as a child. His work history included building bridges on the new construction of interstate 95, owning and operating a Gulf Station in Mattawamkeag in 1965, and employment at the Millinocket Foundry from 1968-1986. An entrepreneur at heart, Dick formed a family operated business, Day’s Welding & Machine in 1986. This multi-trade business performed industrial, commercial and residential projects throughout New England and beyond. Dick was a hardworking man of many talents including automotive, tractor and equipment repair and restoration. A few of his favorite projects included restoring a 1929 Model A Ford to mint condition with the help of his son Dickie and building a home on his family farm in Woodville for his daughter Julie.
Family meant everything to Dick. He was a wonderful husband, amazing father and outstanding “Papa” and greatly enjoyed family gatherings of any kind. He taught us all to always work hard for what you want and gave us many great memories, unconditional love, stories and life lessons.
Dick and his wife Jane loved to travel together and visited many places. Some of their favorite trips together were to Florida, Idaho, Mexico, Aruba, Germany, Italy and Austria. They loved the coast of Maine so much that they built a home there with plans to retire someday.
Dick is survived by his beloved wife, Jane (Coombs) of 55 years, his son, Richard “Dickie” and Julie Day, his daughter Julie and Brent Goodine, grandchildren Lauren and Max Voisine, Aaron Goodine and Jordan Beach, and Kyle Manzo and great grandson, Levi Voisine. He also leaves behind his siblings, Betty, Janice, Penny, Kay, Harold, Dana and Dale and additional family and many friends. He was predeceased by his parents, siblings Dottie, Reggie and Dusty and mother and father-in-law Woodrow and Margaret Coombs.
Dick loved his community and was a friend and mentor to many. A few of his coined sayings were “Never stop dreaming” and “Tomorrow’s gonna be a better day.”
The family invites you to join them for memorial services on Saturday, June 27 at Lamson Funeral Home, Clay Chapel, 7 Lee Road in Lincoln. Visiting hours will be held from 11am – 1pm, with a service following at 1pm, Rev. Reggie Adams officiating. Interment will be at the Grindstone Cemetery, Medway at a later date.
