Obituary for Rena Mary Hughes
Millinocket - Early in the morning on December 22, Rena Santerre Hughes, at home
with family, left us to be with her Lord at her eternal home in heaven. We
know she is enjoying true bliss now that she is reunited with the family
members who departed on that special journey before her. Rena was born
on July 4, 1933, the daughter of Herbert and Louise Martin Santerre of
Millinocket. She was a devout communicant of Christ the Divine Mercy
Parish at St. Martin of Tours in Millinocket. Rena will always be
remembered for her strong devotion and the love that she had for our Lord
and his mother Mary. The divine faith and love she has passed on to her
children and grandchildren will be her legacy. Rena was always known as a
very prayerful lady since she was a young girl. She taught her children the
importance of having a strong faith and the power and comfort it affords,
and that devotion continues to this day through her children and nine
grandchildren.
Rena loved to travel with her husband Al and other friends, whether it
was to Bangor shopping or with tour groups to sacred religious sites all
over Europe and Mexico. Rena also loved spending days at their camp on
Ambejejus Lake in the company of family, friends, and relatives. She had a
special place in her heart for her grandchildren and they all knew how
important they were to her and she was to them.
Together, Rena and Al started the Padre Pio prayer group in
Millinocket and throughout other areas in Maine. She was always proud to
be a graduate of St. Martin of Tours Catholic school in Millinocket, class of
1952. Rena was part of a very large and loving family who loved to gather
and have parties. (We all remember the time Rena invited several people
to camp for a get-together and cookout but forgetting the date herself,
spent the day shopping and dining in a restaurant in Bangor while the rest
of us went hungry!)
Rena is survived by her loving husband of 68 years Albert (“Al”)
Hughes, her daughters Pamela White and husband David of East
Millinocket, Vickie Baron and husband Phil of Millinocket, Sandy Hartley
and husband Ronnie of Millinocket; sons Bill Hughes of Bangor, Steve
Hughes of Millinocket, and Bruce Hughes and wife Jamilyn of Glenburn.
She has nine grandchildren: Jonathan White and wife Erin from Overland
Park, Kansas; Mark White and partner, Andy Joseph of Allston,
Massachusetts, Gregory Libby and wife Jessica of Hudson,
Jason Baron and girlfriend Alisha Arsenault of Millinocket, Derek Hartley
and girlfriend Olivia Raymond of South Portland, Zachary Hartley of
Cranberry, Pennsylvania, Baxter and Cooper Hughes of Glenburn, and
granddaughter Daniesha Hughes of Bangor. Rena is also survived by five
siblings: her twin sister Irene Tapley, Ernestine Quackenbush and husband
Harold, Ernest Santerre and wife Ann, Herbert (Joe) Santerre and wife Pat,
Maryann St. Peter and husband Harold, a special sister-in-law Mary
Santerre, brother-in-law Jackie Hughes of Florida, step brother-in-law,
Arthur Hughes of New Hampshire, and sister-in-law Barbara Hughes of
Lewiston. Rena is also survived by seven great grandchildren and many
loving nieces and nephews as well a very special cousin, Egbert Plourde
and wife Mary.
Rena was predeceased by her parents Herbert and Louise Martin
Santerre; her brothers Wilfred and wife Lorena Santerre, Richard and wife
Joanne Santerre, Clarence (Doc) Santerre, Delphis (Del) Santerre, sisters
Dorothy and husband Philip Raymond, Verna and husband Guy Charette,
Florence (Flossie) and Freddie Picard, and brothers-in-law, Wallace Tapley
and Roland (Babe) Beaulieu; in-laws Albert and Mabel Hughes, Pat
Pelletier, Irma and William Milton, Eli Hughes , Billie Hughes, and Rodrick
and RoseMary Miller.
Our family would like to extend a special thanks to Millinocket
Regional Hospital for the care and attention they gave our mother. Thanks
also to Community Health and Counseling who provided care. We also
appreciate the Katahdin Area Support Group. We especially want to thank
Bruce Leavitt, Guildas Bouchard and Julie Gross, close friends of the family
who have always been there.
Family and Friends are invited to visit with the family from 10-11am
Friday, December 27th at Christ the Divine Mercy Parish St. Martin of Tours
Catholic Church 19 Colby St. Millinocket, where a Mass of Christian Burial
will be celebrated at 11am. Interment will be at the Millinocket Cemetery to
be announced in the spring. Gifts in memory of Rena may be sent to the
Funeral Luncheon Fund at St. Martin Christ Divine Mercy Parish.
