Obituary for Raymond "The Colonel" Darveau

East Millinocket – Ray “The Colonel” Darveau, 73, died unexpectedly in his home on Saturday March 20, 2021. Ray, son of Marjorie R. and Richard L Darveau of Danforth, Maine, was born on August 16, 1947, at Thayer Hospital in Waterville, Maine.
Ray graduated from East Grand High School in Danforth, class of 1965. He married his high school sweetheart, Susan A.Carr also of Danforth, Maine. They celebrated 53 years of marriage on May 3, 2020. After high school, Ray enlisted in the United States Navy and served in Vietnam from 1968-1970 earning numerous awards and citations. After Vietnam, Ray came home to Maine where he took a job at Great Northern Paper, Co. in East Millinocket where he worked for 38 years, becoming a millwright specializing in vibration analysis. Ray also became a member of the Maine Army National Guard where he served part-time as a medic in the 314th Medical Company in Millinocket.
Ray was an active life member of the Disabled American Veterans (DAV), serving various positions including Sergeant at Arms at the Bernard Coro Chapter 22 in Medway. He was an avid gun collector and even had a shop, Colonel’s Collectibles, in his house for many years. He was also a lover of classic cars and recently had his 1955 Studebaker pickup restored, which he, his wife Susan, and dog Brutus just loved to ride around in and share with others.
Ray was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He is survived by his beloved wife Susan; his daughter Renee Hudgens and her husband Glen of Bangor; his son Rick Darveau and his wife Michelle of South China; grandchildren Kortnie Mullins and her husband Nick of Bangor along with first great grandchild Olive Mullins who will turn one in May; Miranda Hudgens of Orebro, Sweden; Kaitlyn Darveau of South China; and Mason Faucher of Augusta.
A memorial gathering will be held from 1 to 3 p.m., Saturday March 27, 2021, at Lamson Funeral Home, 11 Tamarack St., Millinocket. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Ray’s name to the Disabled American Veterans at www.dav.org.
