East Millinocket – Randall K. Ewing 95, passed away August 13th, 2023, at a Bangor hospital. He was born February 25, 1928, in West Enfield, Maine, the son of Kenneth B. Ewing and Alice (Messer) Ewing. His youth was spent in West Enfield, but he also spent time at his grandparent’s farm on Vinegar Hill in Burlington, Maine. He was fond of saying his father slid down Vinegar Hill and his mother slid down Passadumkeag Mountain and they met in the middle.
Randall was a veteran of WWII and a proud member of the U.S. Navy. At 17 he enlisted and served two years. Much of this time was spent on the U.S.S. Collett one of only 200 destroyers called “tin cans” for having such thin hulls. The sailors on the boats were dubbed “tin can sailors” and Randy was a proud member of this group.
After his service he returned to Maine and on August 13th, 1949, he married Jean C. Morancy of French island in Old Town, Maine. After early struggles which included a brief move to Connecticut, they settled in East Millinocket, Maine and raised 4 children. Randall worked the next 17 years for the Great Northern Paper Company. He built a camp on Ambejejus Lake where many happy memories were made. When the paper mill closed the Chemical plant section where Randy worked, he made a life change and became a fireman for the Town of East Millinocket. Randy was regular fireman for 7 years and then became Fire Chief for the last 13 years of his time there. After retirement Randy and Jean started driving. They crossed America a couple of times and eventually bought a small place in Florida to spend the cold months of winter. The rest of the time they kept busy with the kids, grandkids, friends and extended family. Randy lost Jean in 2005 and while it left a hole, he kept busy. Randy was an avid fisherman, hunter, and forager. Luckily, he passed on the location of his best cranberry bog and where to find the best fiddle heads. He loved being at camp. When he was done for the day, you’d find him sitting on the beach watching the sunset.
Randy is survived by son Jim Ewing and his partner Jill Somers of Ambejejus and Millinocket, ME, Daughter Diane Ewing of East Millinocket, ME, Sisters Ellie Edes of North Anson, ME, Janice and husband Lloyd Stevens of Lincoln, ME, Shirly and husband Russell Knox of Lakeland, FL and Darrell and wife Penny Ewing of Clifton, VA, granddaughter Christy Ewing, grandsons Brad Barnet, Aaron Ewing, Adam Ewing and Eric Ewing. He is also survived by his beautiful twin great-granddaughters Llly and Blake Barnet. He was pre-deceased by his wife Jean, sons Ricky Ewing and John Ewing both of Maine, a brother Malcom Ewing of Nevada, brother-in-laws Darrell Edes and Carroll Albert both of Maine. He also leaves a large extended family of Nieces, Nephews and cousins who will miss him terribly. He always had the best stories.
