Obituary for Phillip L. "Phil" Dawson Sr.

Howland – Phillip Dawson, 87, surrounded by his family left us peacefully on Friday, December 21, 2018 to continue his journey with his wife, who left us fourteen years ago. He was born April 19, 1931 in Howland, the son of Charles and Beatrice Dawson.

Phil was a graduate of Howland High School and entered the U.S Air Force. Towards the end of his tour, Phil met his future wife, Helen. On April 17, 1955, they were married, and stayed together for 49 years until her passing in October of 2004. During that time they raised three sons and one daughter. Phil was a devoted father to 4, grandfather to 10, and great grandfather to 23.

Phil worked at and retired from Lincoln Pulp and Paper. He spent his retirement years following his children’s and grandchildren’s school and sports activities, spending time with his family, especially during the holidays and building model ships. Phil spent many years as a member of the Howland Fire Department, proudly serving with his sons and two of his grandchildren.

Phil is survived by three sons and their wives, Phillip L. Dawson, Jr. and his wife Janet, Dwight A. Dawson and his wife Carol, Brian P. Dawson and his wife Karen, and a daughter, Debora L. Dawson; grandchildren, Brandie (Dawson) Smith and her husband Dan, Rachael (Dawson) Hallett, Larry Ellis and his wife Jill, Sarah (Dawson) Jackson and her husband Josh, Scott Ellis and his wife Kelly, Ashley Dawson, Brooke Dawson, Derek Dawson and his wife Candice, Erin (Dawson) Chase and her husband Nick, and Kirstie (Dawson) Trahan and her husband Seth; twenty three great grandchildren with two more on the way; four brothers and sisters in law, Richard “Dick” Panse, George Panse, and Frances gibbons, all of Florida, and Colleen Josephson of New York; In addition to his wife, Phil was predeceased by his parents, stepfather Vital LeVasseur, sisters Ava Dawson and Wilma (Dawson) Scott, as well as several brothers and sisters in law.

At Phil’s request, visitation and service will be private. Spring interment, with military honors, will be at the Howland Cemetery. Gifts in memory of Phil may be sent to the Penobscot Valley Hospital, 7 Transalpine Road, Lincoln, ME 04457. Arrangements are by Lamson Funeral Home, Clay Chapel, Lincoln.
