Obituary for Paul Nicholson
Medway – Paul H. Nicholson, 60, died unexpectedly January 21, 2019, at his home in
Medway. He was born September 9, 1958, in Millinocket, the son of Fred and Martha
(Coffin) Nicholson.
He was proud to be one of the “Medway Boys” who enjoyed playing basketball so much
that they would get together and shovel the snow off their basketball court in order to
play a game of basketball in the wintertime. His love of basketball continued throughout
his school years. He was most proud of having been one of the starting five on Schenck
High School’s 1976 Class B Eastern Maine Championship team that defeated Ellsworth
his senior year. Being from Medway, Paul had to prove himself to earn this spot. He also
earned Best Defensive Player that year. Baseball was also close to his heart, as he played
catcher for the wolverines. Paul graduated from Schenck High School as part of the Class
of 1976. Following graduation, he worked at Great Northern Paper Company in East
Millinocket for one year before attending EMVTI which he graduated with his Associate
degree in Machine Tool. He then returned to work at Great Northern Paper Company in
Millinocket until 1993. In 1993, he started work at Lincoln Paper & Tissue; working
there until its closure in 2016. Undeterred and unable to sit idle, Paul continued his
education by completing a woodworking course at NPT region III. There he crafted
several pieces of furniture for his family that will last for generations to come.
His love of sports continued as he coached his three daughters throughout their school
years. He volunteered countless hours for the local community including refereeing and
coaching basketball and softball. Paul was a huge fan of the Boston Red Sox, Celtics, and
New England Patriots. He rarely missed a game. Paul also enjoyed spending his summers
with his wife and dogs at their camper in Bar Harbor where their daughters visited them
frequently. Furthermore, Paul was known for his sweet tooth and enjoyed cooking for his
family.
Paul is survived by his beloved wife, Terrina (Hogan) Nicholson who he married on
September 22, 1984; daughters Kristen Stanley and her husband Chad of Enfield; Laura
Bouchard and her husband Max of Millinocket; and Amy York and her husband Jerome
of East Millinocket; a brother Steven of Old Town; brother in-law Marty Hogan and his
wife Debby of Brick, NJ; one niece Brooke Hogan of Brick, NJ; and a very good friend
Kevin Drost of Lincoln. Paul was Papa to his granddaughter Lilah Mae Bouchard, who
brought him an everlasting amount of joy the past 16 months.
“Men of few words are the best of men” is a quote referenced by Paul in his yearbook
which fit him perfectly. Although he was a quiet man, he was the first to offer help to
anyone whether it be family, neighbors, or a stranger; never expecting anything in return.
A service of remembrance will be held in the spring. Interment will be in Medway. In
lieu of flowers, donations can be made at Katahdin Federal Credit Union or to Terrina
Nicholson. A college fund has been set up for his granddaughter Lilah Mae Bouchard.
