Nancy S. Noyes - Lee and Charleston – On Monday, October 17, 2022, Nancy passed peacefully in Lincoln. Born in Exeter February 13, 1935 to Geneva (Sawyer) and Clyde L. Smith, Sr., Nancy graduated from Maine Central Institute. She attended Bates College for one year of liberal arts studies.
Nancy leaves behind her beloved husband, Vinal L. Noyes, Jr., of nearly 67 years, daughter Lisa J. Noyes, son Vinal L. Noyes, III and wife Melinda (Panero), granddaughter Stephanie Noyes Schmidt and husband Tom, great-grandsons Aaron Noyes and Hunter Schmidt, step-grandchildren Megan and Josh Bolton, and Mario and Lauren Panero, and step-great-grandson Eli. In addition, Nancy leaves behind her younger brother Clyde L. Smith, Jr. and wife Sandra, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Nancy enjoyed a varied career, mainly in public service. She was a paralegal and notary public for Arthur C. Hathaway, attorney in Dover-Foxcroft for 10 years. In 1977, she was elected the first female Selectman of Charleston. The following year, she became Town Clerk of Charleston, a position she held for another 10 years. She also served as part-time Town Clerk for Hudson, Garland, and Medford.
In 1953, Nancy joined Signet Chapter of the Eastern Star in Exeter. 1961, she was installed as Worthy Matron. In 1974, she joined the Silver Leaf Chapter in Charleston, serving in all of the stations.
In 2002, Nancy and Vinal moved to the family Silver Lake camp in Lee and upgraded it to a year-round residence. Nancy served as Town Clerk of Lee and part-time postal worker for the Town of Lee.
Nancy also served as Treasurer for the North Woods Alliance Church in Lee for several years, as well as collecting donated food from Hannaford each week for the Church’s food pantry.
Nancy and Vinal enjoyed hunting moose with friends, taking snowmobile trips from Silver Lake to another family camp on Junior Lake, and to friends’ camps on Grand Lake. She and Vinal enjoyed a 10-day fishing trip down the Allagash River, and two rafting trips with family down the Kennebec River. She also enjoyed knitting Christmas presents for her children, nieces, and nephews, crocheting, sewing dance costumes for Lisa, and mother-daughter fashions for herself and Lisa, as well as completing cross-word puzzles and 1000-piece puzzles.
Memorial services will be held 10 AM Saturday, October 22 at Lamson Funeral Home, 7 Lee Road, Lincoln. In lieu of flowers, please consider making donations to the Penobscot Valley Animal Shelter, 1 Park St., Lincoln, in remembrance of Nancy and her love of animals.
