Mattawamkeag & Lincoln - Mary “Mamie” Elizabeth Barton, 94, passed away Friday, November 15, 2019 at her residence in Lincoln. She was born July 24, 1925, in Lincoln, the daughter of Bernard and Inez (Knight) Glidden.
Mamie grew up in Chester upon entering high school moved in with her grandparents so she could attend Mattawamkeag High School. After she graduated from high school she moved to Massachusetts and enrolled in beauty school. Once she graduated, Mamie returned to Mattawamkeag and worked various jobs. Mamie then became the cafeteria manager at Forsters Manufacturing and retired in her early fifties. Ten years ago as her health declined, she moved from her home in Mattawamkeag to Lincoln. In earlier years Mamie enjoyed knitting and camping.
She leaves behind several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents she was predeceased by her husband Amos Barton, three sisters: Hazel Fleming, Elsie Sweeney, and Norma Robichaud.
A graveside service will be held at Mattawamkeag Cemetery in the spring. Those who wish to remember Mamie in a special way may make gifts in her memory to the Penobscot Valley Humane Society, P.O. Box 73, Lincoln, ME 04457. Arrangements are by Lamson Funeral Home, Clay Chapel, Lincoln.
