Obituary for Lewis Elmer Thornton

Lincoln and Greenville – Lewis Elmer Thornton died Saturday, June 5, 2021 after a short illness surrounded by his family at Charles A Dean hospital in Greenville. He was born November 10, 1928 in Lincoln to Benjamin and Ethel-Eva (Bailey) Thornton. He is survived by his wife of sixty-eight years, Ardean (Priest) Thornton; his son, Brian Thornton, and Brian’s wife Cathy; daughter, Brenda Brehaut; daughter Mary-Beth Libby and her husband Brian; Jaquelyn Thornton and her husband, Michael.
Lewis is survived by eight grandchildren Brad Libby; Ty Brehaut and wife Courtney; Betheny Proctor and husband Travis; Tristen Brehaut and wife Amanda; Kristin Thornton; Casey Thornton; and Crystal McGuire and husband Joey; Donald McLain and wife, Courtney. And 10 great grandchildren include Zachary and Elliot Brehaut, Addison Libby, Hunter and Hudson Proctor, Wyatt Brehaut, Donald Jr and Quinn McLain, Aurora and Beau McGuire.
He loved his two nieces and one nephew and their families that live in New Hampshire, as well as his large extended family in Maine and throughout the country.
He was predeceased by son-in-law Stanley Brehaut, Great Granddaughter Caddis Grace McGuire, and brother Richard Thornton.
Holly, Robert and Robert Douglass were Lew and Ardean’s adopted “Florida Family” who they met through a church mentoring program.
He served his country in the military during the Korean War and was employed by the A&P grocery stores 45 years in Lincoln, Waterville, and Greenville.
Lew spent his retirement years enjoying family on Cold Stream Pond and building picnic tables in Greenville. He spent many winters in Florida where he will be remembered by his friends and family. He was known for his picnic tables throughout the Moosehead area. He planted a garden and built his last table just days before he passed. Lewis had a quick-witted sense of humor and was a caring and loving friend, father, and grandfather. He enjoyed donuts and Moxie. The family wants to extend a special thank you to Karen Edwards for the loving and kind care she has given to Lewis and Ardean since 2020, and to the compassionate staff at Charles A. Dean Hospital in Greenville.
