Obituary for Lawrence J. Gagnon
Mattawamkeag – Lawrence J. Gagnon, 96, died Saturday, July 20, 2019 at the Maine Veteran’s Home in Bangor. He was born September 30. 1922, the son of Eddie and Delphine (Dube) Gagnon.
Lawrence grew up in Guerette, and was the first of his 4 brothers to enlist in the Army after the attack on Pearl Harbor. He served four years as a Medic in the European Theater during World War II. Lawrence worked for over 30 years at the Great Northern Paper Company in East Millinocket, retiring in the late 1980’s. A man with a strong faith, Lawrence read his Bible and prayed daily. He lived his life dedicated to his faith. He was a communicant and Eucharistic Minister at the Sacred Heart Church in Winn, and was a hospice volunteer for many years with his wife, Thelma. In 1995, he and Thelma were honored as Hospice Volunteers of the Year. He made his Cursillo in Upper Frenchville. Lawrence was a member of the V.F.W. Post in Mattawamkeag, and was also a member of the Knights of Columbus. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, and was a good provider for his family. Lawrence was holder of the Boston Post Cane for Mattawamkeag, and was honored as the Grand Marshall of the Mattawamkeag Days Parade in 2014. In October of 2016, Lawrence was able to see the World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C. through the courtesy of Honor Flights.
Lawrence is survived three children, Linda Lare and her husband Troy, James Gagnon and his wife Sharon, and Carlene Deschenes and her husband Romeo; eight grandchildren; fifteen great grandchildren; three siblings, Alan Gagnon and his wife Gerry; Blanche Pelletier, and Shirley Pelletier and her husband Edmond; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was predeceased by his wife of 62 years, Thelma (Gendreau) Gagnon; two daughters, Elaine Carter, and Lorraine Gagnon;; siblings, Lorenza, Emily,Willard, and Wilbert.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff and caregivers at the Maine Veteran’s Home in Bangor for the loving and dedicated care given to Lawrence.
Friends are invited to visit with the family 10-11 A.M. Tuesday, July 23 at Christ the Divine Mercy Parish, St. Peter’s Catholic Church, 58 Cedar Street, East Millinocket, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 A.M. with the Rev. Bruce Siket, pastor, presider. Interment, with military honors, will be at the Mattawamkeag Cemetery. Arrangements are by Lamson Funeral Home, East Millinocket.
