Obituary for Joan M. Smith

Howland – Joan M. Smith, 81, died Friday, July 8, 2022 at a Bangor hospital. She was born September 15, 1940 in Howland, the daughter of James Maker and Thelma Sawyer.

Joan had a good life. She loved to go fishing, camping, working in her garden, playing cards, swimming in her pool, shopping at Goodwill, playing Bingo, riding in their new golf cart, and most of all, spending time with her family at cookouts, holiday events, or just hanging out and visiting. Joan attended Howland High School and was a member of the American Legion Post #97 Women’s Auxiliary. She was an avid fan of the Boston Red Sox and NASCAR.

Joan leaves behind the love of her life of 52 years, Royce D. Smith, Jr.; two children, Bill Tash and Barbie, and Lisa Haskell and Brent; grandchildren and great grandchildren Sam, April, Micah, and Myles Deeds, Chrystal and Peyton Tash, Christy and Tim Sandborn, Aaron Deeds, Billy, Ashlynn, Avery, Sara, Madi, Marley, and Jace, Fawn Rackliff and Chris, Blake Wyatt, Abel and Ashlee, Paul, Heath, Tasha, Addison, Reese, Ryleigh; Jacob, Cody, Jordan, Sonny, and Virginia; a brother, Dalton Merrill; a sister, Edna Maker; a daughter in law Ruby Henderson Tash; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Joan will also be missed by her canine friend, her beloved Pug, Bandit. In addition to her parents, Joan was predeceased by her mother and father-in-law, Roy D. and Grace M. Smith, brothers Ronald Merrill, and Al Maker, two sisters in law Geraldine Lawrence, and Darlene Chesley, and a grandson, Joshua Tash.

Funeral services will be held 1 PM Friday, July 15 at the Lamson Funeral Home, Clay Chapel, 7 Lee Road, Lincoln. Interment will be at the Howland Cemetery. Services will be livestreamed and may be viewed, and messages of condolence expressed at Joan’s Book of Memories at www.lamsonfh.com.
