Obituary for Joan Gwendolyn Neal (Smart)
Enfield – Joan Gwendolyn (Smart) Neal, 89, passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 8, 2023 with family by her side. She was born November 9, 1933, to Charles and Madeline Smart, growing up in Passadumkeag.
Joan was a graduate of Howland High School, class of 1951, and two weeks later married the love of her life, Clarence. They worked together for over 40 years at C.,A. Neal Adjustment, which they built as a successful Insurance Adjusting Company. She enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing cards, going shopping and to the casino. Joan was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Howland and CSP crew in Enfield.
Joan is survived by her three children, Clarence Neal, Jr., David and Vickie Neal, and Melinda and Lawrence Dube; three grandchildren, aka Nini, Jeremy Neal, David Dube with significant other Melanie Gardner, Kayla Dube with significant other Steven Gibbs; two great grandchildren, Aislinn Neal and Jacob Dube; a sister, Shirley Dunn; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by five siblings – Manson, Doug, Walter, Herbert Smart and Geraldine Clukey, and a grandson, Jacob Neal.
The family would like to thank Beacon Hospice for their exceptional care and compassion. A private graveside service will take place in the spring.
