Obituary for Joan M. Gordon (Cunningham)

East Millinocket and Camden – Joan M. (Cunningham) Gordon, 80, reached the end of her life’s journey on Saturday, January 16, 2021 at Windward Gardens in Camden. She was born November 27, 1940 in Island Falls, the daughter of Leslie and Ruth (Purvis) Cunningham.

Joan was a graduate of Mattawamkeag High School, class of 1959, and Eastern Maine General Hospital School of Nursing, class of 1962. She worked as a Registered Nurse at Millinocket Regional Hospital and also as a community health nurse for East Millinocket. Later she worked for Nutri-System in Bangor and the Katahdin Nursing Home in Millinocket.

Joan enjoyed knitting, reading, hiking, and observing our beautiful country and nature. Her life long dream came true in 1989 when she drove to Alaska alone, camping along the way. After the summer there she felt her faith had been renewed and her spirits filled.

Joan was a faithful member of the First Congregational Church, UCC of East Millinocket, and assisted the Katahdin Area Support Group and the Millinocket chapter of the AARP.

Joan is survived by a daughter, Leslie Curtis and her husband Warren, and a son, Craig Gordon of East Wareham, Massachusetts. She also leaves a special friend, Jan Welch of Embden Lake.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the nurses and staff at Windward Gardens for the loving care, special attention, and thoughtful courtesies extended to Joan during her time there.

Friends are invited to visit with the family 1-3 PM Friday, January 22 at the Lamson Funeral Home, 11 Tamarack Street, Millinocket. A celebration of Joan’s life will be held 11 AM Saturday, January 23 at the First Congregational Church of East Millinocket, 11 Maple Street, East Millinocket with the Rev. Jane Mary Frost, pastor, officiating. Gifts in memory of Joan may be sent to the Katahdin Area Support Group, P.O. Box 374, Millinocket, ME 04462. Services will be livestreamed, and messages of condolence expressed, at Joan’s Book of Memories at www.lamsonfh.com.
