Obituary for Jacqueline McAdam
Millinocket - Jacqueline “Jackie” A. McAdam, 83, passed away on Thursday, April 2, 2020, at Katahdin Nursing Home in Millinocket, Maine, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease.
Jackie was born on June 10, 1937, in Millinocket, the daughter of the late William and Yvonne (Guerette) Boutaugh. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her beloved husband Robert “Bob” McAdam, her brothers Joseph (Earl)and Phillip Boutaugh, and her sister Janet (Boutaugh) Lamson.
She is survived by her daughter Mary McAdam of Paeonian Springs, Va., sisters- and brothers-in-law, numerous nieces and nephews, and many close friends.
Jackie was a devout Catholic and a retired seventh grade social studies teacher who devoted her life to helping others. She entered Our Lady of the Holy Rosary convent in Rimouski, Quebec, Canada, out of high school. She left the convent after more than a decade, completed her college studies and returned to her hometown, where she taught school for many years, earning a reputation as a tough but fair teacher who adored her students and finding creative ways to help them learn.
After losing her husband to pancreatic cancer in 1986, she founded the Katahdin Area Support Group, a volunteer organization dedicated to helping cancer patients and their families in the region. Jackie, with the help of volunteers, worked tirelessly to advocate for cancer care and bring much needed material, emotional and spiritual support to local families, touching thousands of lives. Although she received numerous awards and accolades for her public service– including the Maine AARP Andrus Award for community service and a national Jefferson Award finalist -- she didn’t want personal recognition but rather to bring awareness to the needs of others.
Jackie was well loved by many and was best known for her cooking, knitting projects and love of gardening. An early riser, she spent much of her time in the kitchen or in the garden. Friends and family were always welcome at her home for a game of cards or a homemade meal, and her door was open to all. Above all, Jackie’s faith was most important to her. She was active in St. Martin’s church as a eucharistic minister, long-time member of the Daughters of Isabella and regular contributor to the annual church tea with her popular baked and canned goods.
Jackie will be dearly missed by her daughter, family and friends. Special thanks go to the caring staff at Katahdin Healthcare for their help during the final stages of her illness. Funeral services will be held at a later date.
