Obituary

Lincoln and Fredericton, NB. – Gladys Leone Elliott, 83 , died peacefully on Saturday, October 19, at the Hospice House in Frederciton, NB. Born in Lincoln Maine, Leone, was the daughter of the late Gladys (ne Grass) and Lester Carlow. Leone is survived by her daughter, Christine (married to Randy Russell of Fredericton); her stepdaughter Betty Cormier , and grandchildren Christy and Jillian. She is also survived by her sister, Judy Wilson, and by three brothers; Robert, Lester (“Stubby”), and Linwood.

Leone grew up in Lincoln, Maine in a family of thirteen children. Her father was a blacksmith and she spent many happy hours working with him. From her childhood and well into her more advanced years, Leone’s happy place has always been outdoors; especially in the woods where she was an avid fisher, hunter and hiker.

Leone married Paul York in 1952 and she then worked as a cook in a logging camp with him and with her father, Lester. Leone was always a very hard worker; not only did she work as a cook, she also worked as a school janitor, nanny, house cleaner, Red Cross support worker and school bus driver. Leone married Harold McLean in 1972 and in 1974 she gave birth to Christine. They had many happy years together in Chipman NB, before he passed away in 1988. In 1992, Leone married Lloyd Elliott, who predeceased her.

She played a loving role in the lives of many of her nieces and nephews who affectionately called her, Aunt Onwnie. She helped to lovingly raise her nephew, Rodney Carlow and her niece Kathy King.

Leone was a devout Christian and her relationship with Jesus was always the center and most important part of her life. She loved the women’s church group at the Smythe Street Cathedral and their Thursday morning meetings; it was a group that brought her much joy, comfort and special friendship.

Leone’s greatest joys in life revolved around spending time with her daughter, and her two grandchildren, Christy and Jillian. She was a huge part of Christy and Jillian’s life throughout their childhood, and they forged a deep and everlasting bond.

Leone’s love of horses, forged through her helping her blacksmith father, has been passed along the family line. Leone was an enthusiastic supporter of Jillian’s passion for horse riding. Leone was happy to attend Christy’s graduation from high school this past June. She was very proud of Christy and Jillian’s accomplishments and for their ability to overcome adversity in life.

There will be a funeral service for Leone on Wednesday, 23 October at Full Gospel Tabernacle Lincoln, Maine from 11 AM to 1 PM officiated by Rev. Tony Stewart. Burial will be at the Lincoln Cemetery. Arrangements are by Lamson Funeral Home, Clay Chapel, Lincoln

Aunt Onie and uncle Paul took me in for a few short years. While there Aunt Onie faithfully took me to church where I fell in love with Jesus. She will be missed and always remembered.
