Obituary for Geraldine Gagnon (Hoagland)
East Millinocket - Geraldine, the loving wife of Alan Gagnon, went home to be with the Lord on March 30, 2021. Geraldine loved Alan dearly and appreciated him beyond words. Together they made the best team, always laughing, eating sweets, and drinking coffee together. Alan was a wonderful and caring husband to Geraldine.
Geraldine will be lovingly remembered by her children. Geraldine was mother to Sherry Hinrichs; Kurt Hinrichs and wife, Leslie; Jackie Prince; Carol Baker and husband, Frank; and Sandra McCluskey and husband, Jed.
Geraldine was predeceased by three of her grandchildren, Jason Hinrichs, Timmy Pooler, and Dawn York, wife to Andy. She leaves behind her many grandchildren, John Mankowski and wife, Amanda, Eric Prince, Todd Pooler and wife, Cyndy, Angela and husband, Erik Jonker, Jeffery Pooler and wife, Shannon, Christine Spaulding, Aaron McCluskey, Elizabeth Owens, Emily Hinrichs, and Austin and Elizabeth Gilks; great-grandchildren, Tyler Prince, Kyle Carpenter and his wife, Chelsea, Sydney, Drew, and Todd Pooler, Alex and Drew York, Emma, Sophie, Ethan, and Samuel Mankowski, Elizabeth, Abby, and Cara Pooler, Brayden Carter, Joslyn, and Weston Jonker; and one great-great-grandson, Henry Wyatt Carpenter.
Geraldine was born to Gerald and Bessie Hoagland on February 12th, 1930, in Chicago, Illinois. She moved to Battlecreek, Michigan as a young girl and lived on Sherman Lake. Geraldine was named after her late father Gerald, who she enjoyed going fishing with as a child. She loved growing up on Sherman Lake and taught herself how to swim. She was a fantastic swimmer and would have spent every second of the day in the lake swimming if she could. Geraldine loved to reminisce about the days on the lake and the dances she attended with her mother. She was very close with her mother Bessie. Geraldine liked school and was a good student. She had an adventurous spirit and was known to have ridden on the back of a motorcycle, back in the day.
After graduating high school, Geraldine joined the Women's Army Corps (WAC) and served during the Korean War. She had very fond memories of those days and the friends she had made at that time. Geraldine traveled and lived across the USA before settling down in Maine on The Narrows Lake.
Geraldine was quite stylish, having made a lot of her own clothes in her younger years. She was always well-put-together and enjoyed shopping. She was a night owl and may have called the Home Shopping Network a time or two.
Geraldine had a love for cooking and one summer she had an opportunity to work at Camp Natarswi Girl Scout Camp in Millinocket as a cook. She had a blast that summer. Geraldine was a talented artist in the medium of oil-based paints and watercolors. She studied under Philip Brockway and The Famous Artist Schools. Some of her paintings were featured in various businesses around town, like her Gladiolas painting. Geraldine was a proud member of The Millinocket Art Society. During that time, she acted as Treasurer, Vice President, and President. Geraldine taught art classes through Adult Education, which she really enjoyed. She also loved playing the organ and we loved listening to her play. She was a very talented, intelligent, creative woman who was very modest about her gifts.
Geraldine enjoyed planting flowers and spending time in her flower garden. She painted rocks beautifully and she would place them around her flower garden to enjoy.
Even though Geraldine had a sweet tooth with a love for chocolate and homemade pie, she was very health conscious owning one of the first Vitamix blenders. She was a big fan of Jack LaLanne and enjoyed juicing and reading health-related books and magazines. She led an active lifestyle and enjoyed exercising. If she wasn't swimming, sometimes you would see her roller-skating around her neighborhood. Additionally, she loved going for walks. She would often go for walks on The Golden Road in Millinocket to be surrounded by God's beautiful creation. She saw a bear there once.
Geraldine had a wonderful sense of humor. She had the greatest, most infectious laugh and was a wonderfully detailed storyteller. We enjoyed listening to her share her stories as we shared a meal together, sitting around her dining room table.
Geraldine would oftentimes go out for lunch. She loved going for rides and was sometimes heavy-footed while driving her Lincoln Town Car. When she wasn't out and about you could find her at home watching old black and white movies, National Geographic, or one of her favorite Christian television shows.
She will be remembered for the love she had for our Lord and Savior and the love and dedication she had for her family. Her love was unwavering. She was always there to lend an ear and give good sound advice. She was a very forgiving person, which was truly admirable. She was an incredibly strong woman with a generous heart and took care of her family well. She had a dynamic personality and was loved by her family very much. Geraldine loved Jesus with her whole heart and leaves this legacy to her family.
The family would like to thank Lloyd and Mary for always being there to lend a helping hand. We would also like to thank The Katahdin Nursing Home for the wonderful care and love you showed Gerry for the last seven months.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. May 22, 2021, at Calvary Temple Church, 2 Orchard Street, East Millinocket. Immediately following the funeral service, a burial will be held at The East Millinocket Cemetery, ME-157. Please join the family for a luncheon at Calvary Temple Church afterward.
