Obituary for Dorothy Sylvia "Dot" Doane

Kingman – Dorothy Sylvia “Dot” Doane, 87, wife of the late Lewis Doane, Sr., died Tuesday, January 24, 2023, at a Lincoln Health Care Facility. She was born September 7, 1935 in Medway, the daughter of Rev. Melvin and Sarah (Powers) Thompson, the eighth of sixteen children.

Dot grew up in Medway and East Millinocket, and moved to Kingman, where she met and married her husband, in 1953, sharing 55 years together until his death. Dot and Lewis had five children, and they all loved her dearly, and she them. She was a hard worker, starting in her younger years as a shoe shiner, delivering lunch pails to mill workers, picking potatoes for Hazen Jipson and Cap Perrin, and ending her working career at Foster’s Manufacturing in Mattawamkeag. In her spare time, Dot loved playing Bingo, where she made many friends. Going out to eat and enjoying scallops or the #12 Dinner Special at Wing Wah’s were among her favorites. She was able to recall from memory the who, where, and when of many important events and people, even if she hadn’t seen them in years, including details such as what they drove or other minute details not easily remembered by most. She loved her grandchildren and great grandchildren, and would always ask about them, even when dementia was setting in. Dot always loved socializing at Sunday dinners and family reunions. She will be lovingly missed and fondly remembered by those she leaves behind.

Dot is survived by three children, Dana Doane and his significant other Ellie Hanscom; Brenda Pratt and her husband Donald, Loretta Hersom and her husband Dana; two daughters in law, Delia Doane and Brandee Doane; siblings Gloria Anderson, Joann Hunt, Robena Dugan, Arnold Thompson, and Alton Thompson; sisters in law Babe Linscott and Pauline Snow; many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins. In addition to her husband and parents, Dot was predeceased by two sons, Neal Doane and Lewis “Luke” Doane, Jr., a grandson, Timothy N. Doane, a sister in law June Sherwood, her step mother Ethel, and several siblings.

Friends are invited to visit with the family 4-6 PM Saturday, February 4, 2023 at the Lamson Funeral Home, Clay Chapel, 7 Lee Road, Lincoln. Graveside services will be held in the springtime at the Kingman Cemetery. Gifts in memory of Dot may be sent to the Penobscot Valley Humane Society, 1 Park Avenue, Lincoln, ME 04457.
