Lincoln – Doris Elizabeth O’Dell Carney, 95, passed away Thursday, August 25, 2022. She was born February 27, 1927 in Orono to Peter J. and Bernadette (Grant) O’Dell.
Doris lived her early childhood years in Orono. At age 8 she moved to Lincoln where she graduated from Mattanawcook Academy with the class of 1945. She was a standout athlete throughout high school, excelling in basketball. Upon graduation she was employed at Lincoln Trust until she married her brother’s best friend, a handsome Marine, Milton P. Carney. Together they made a great team making Carney’s Clothing a thriving and popular Lincoln business on Main Street.
The greatest joy of her life was raising her two sons, Michael Milton and Patrick Peter. She always made them a focal point of her attention, playing with them, biking, camping, hiking, sliding; always being there for them. In later years she worked with Patrick in the clothing business assisting him in nearly all aspects of the business until it’s closing in 1998.
She was an avid golfer (lovingly nicknamed “The Hugging Golfer”), loved fishing, cross country skiing, and travel. She and her husband were members of the Holiday Ramblers RV camping club. They made wonderful travel memories with their many friends.
Doris was an active local volunteer in her church and community. She was a communicant at St. Mary of Lourdes (now Our Lady of the Eucharist) in Lincoln. She was a 50 year member and past regent of The Daughters of Isabella, member of the Legion of Mary, and Prayer Group. She brought joy and companionship to shut-ins and seniors with her visits bringing Holy Communion. She actively volunteered for Meals for ME, the regional food cupboard, and the Penobscot Valley Hospital Auxiliary. She was also well known for her deliveries of lemon scones to so many who were special to her in the community. On April 27, 2013 she received an award from Modern Woodmen for her extensive volunteer work for the town and church.
Doris was predeceased by her husband, mother and father, brother Joseph O’Dell and sister M. Eleanor O’Dell Henry. She is survived by her sons, Michael and his wife Jeanne (Bartlett) Carney, and Patrick and his wife Jeanne (Burgoyne) Carney; grandchildren Audrey Carney Butterfield and husband Michael, Shana Carney Barmoy and husband John, Peter Carney, and Jonathan Carney and wife Alexandra; six great grandchildren, Laura Butterfield, Lillian Butterfield, Justin Carney, Eden Carney, Ella Barmoy, and Autumn Carney. Doris treasured her relationship with her brother’s surviving wife Connie O’Dell, who was more like a sister than a sister in law. There will be an empty spot left in the community and in our family with the loss of Doris.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to Katahdin Health Care, as well as to Colonial Health Care, for the kindness and wonderful care that was given to Doris.
Friends are invited to visit with the family 6-8 PM Friday, September 2 at the Lamson Funeral Home, Clay Chapel, 7 Lee Road in Lincoln. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11 AM Saturday, September 3 at Our Lady of the Eucharist Parish, St. Mary of Lourde’s Catholic Church, 142 Main Street, Lincoln with the Rev. Anthony K. Chinnaiyan, pastor, presider. Interment will be at the Lincoln Cemetery. Gifts in memory of Doris may be sent to the Lincoln Food Cupboard, 32 Park St, Lincoln, ME 04457.
