Millinocket - Donald A. Dow, Jr. died at his home May 27, 2019. He was born in Fort Fairfield, ME in 1942, the son of Avis (Nichols) Dow and Donald A. Dow, Sr. He graduated from Fort Fairfield High School in 1960 and from St. Anselm College in 1964. He has been married for 55 years to his wife, Joyce, and leaves behind, Stephanie, Donald III and his wife Jennifer and Damian Dow and his wife Sandra. He has seven grandchildren, Holly Nisbett of Rollingsford NH, Caden, Carter and Carson Dow of Westbrook, ME and Lilly, Sophie and Danielle Dow of Pittsfield, ME. He also leaves a sister, Lena Estes and her husband George. Don started teaching at Harmony High School, teaching English and Latin and coaching three sports: baseball, girls’ basketball and cross country. He moved to Millinocket and Stearns High School in 1967 starting a cross country team. He was a volunteer in the Millinocket Fire Department for many years. In 1978 he became the Athletic Director at Stearns and over the years taught English, Latin, Civics, Algebra, Drivers’ Education, Motorcycle Education and served in various capacities on the Maine Principals’ Association gymnastics, indoor and outdoor track committees, and part of the MPA Executive Committee. He was awarded a MTCCA Lifetime Achievement Award in 2003, was awarded Athletic Director of the Year in 1990 and served as President of the MIAAA. He served in various capacities in the Penquis League and was Secretary/Treasurer of the Little Ten Conference for 23 years. He was entered into the Maine Sports Legends Hall of Fame in 2010 and received the Marty Ryan Award of Excellence in 2015. He received a Lifetime Achievement Award for Track and Cross Country and a Big East Service Award. He was awarded the MPA Hall of Excellence in 2017. He was a past Exalted Ruler of Lodge 1521 and a past State President of the Maine Elks Association. He also served as chairman of the local Lodge’s Elks Scholarship Committee for 48 years. Don retired as Assistant Principal/AD from Stearns in 2003 due to health reasons. His educational philosophy and personal moral standard was to always do what was in the best interest of the student. A celebration of Don’s life will be held 2 PM Sunday, June 2 at the Stearns High School Gymnasium. Private interment will be at the Millinocket Cemetery.
