Obituary for David R. Sleeper

Mattawamkeag – David R. Sleeper, 89, passed away Sunday, September 22, 2019 at a Bangor hospital, surrounded by his loving wife and family. He was born February 20, 1930 in Sherman Mills, the son of Royce C. and Thelma D. (Sawyer) Sleeper.

David grew up in Sherman, and was a graduate of Sherman High School, class of 1947. After high school, he owned a chicken farm with his brother for a period of time, and held many jobs in the years after, including the Northeastland Hotel in Presque Isle, many potato houses in the area, Great Northern Paper Company, Testa’s Restaurant in West Palm Beach, Florida as well as the Bar Harbor location, Kelley Pontiac in Bangor, and Foster’s Manufacturing in Mattawamkeag from 1968 until he retired in 1992. While at Foster’s he was union president for a period of time. David attended the United Methodist Church of Mattawamkeag and the Congregational Church in Sherman when he was younger. He will be lovingly missed and fondly remembered as a devoted and loving husband, father, and grandfather. David was the best father two little girls could ever have or hope for.

David is survived by his wife of 53 years, Janet L. (Spencer) Sleeper; two daughters, Paula Gagnon and her husband Lou, and Krissy Leonard and her husband Dan; six grandchildren; two great grandchildren; a sister, Lois Foss; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. In addition to his parents, David was predeceased by three brothers.

Graveside services will be held 11 AM Saturday, October 5 at the Mattawamkeag Cemetery. Arrangements are by Lamson Funeral Home, Clay Chapel, Lincoln.
