Obituary for David M. Segee

HOLLIS — David Merrill Segee of 585 Killick Pond Road, Hollis, Maine
passed on Tuesday, April 21, 2020 after a brief illness, at home with his
wife and children. David was the oldest son of his predeceased parents
Polly and Bud Segee from Millinocket, Maine. He attended Stearns High in
Millinocket and was a member of the 1963 New England Basketball
Championship team, earning them a place in the Maine State Basketball Hall
of Fame. David went to college at University of Maine in Orono where he
was a proud member of Theta Chi Fraternity and made lifelong friends.
David earned a Masters Degree while he was a history teacher and football
coach at Gardiner High School. Recognizing the importance of guidance for
students, he continued his education and received a graduate degree in
guidance and counseling. He was Asst. Principal at Kennebunk High
School where he wrote a grant for one of the first Right to Read programs
in Maine and developed the summer program to help students finish high
school. In his eyes, David’s biggest accomplishments were things that
he had done to help students succeed. While Assistant Principal and
Guidance Director at Westbrook High School he advocated for a teen center
as well as the beginning of the program to help teen mothers finish high
school. After a long career in education, David moved on to a very
successful career in small business and real estate, developing a home
health care agency with his wife and building fourteen houses while caring
for his family. David promoted self sufficiency by providing funds for
many young people to continue education and training after high school.
This past winter he sponsored a young Mayan woman from his village in
Belize, Central America to start her quest to become a physician. David
lived his life on his own terms, truly caring of others, always
promoting education and self sufficiency. Of the many things a strong man
is, one that truly cares for others teaches us what is really important.
David is survived by his wife, Joyce (Snow) Segee, daughter, Elizabeth and
her husband Mark Sjulander and a son, Daniel and his fiancée Casey Egan.
David has two young grandsons Wyatt Sjulander and Conner Segee who will
miss his desk drawer full of candy bars, boat rides and stories. He is
also survived by his sister and brother in law, Angela and Ken Laustsen
along with their daughter Katee, as well as his brother and his wife,
Scott Segee and Liz Wright and their sons George and Jay. His family was
very close when he was growing up and he fondly remembered those times
with his aunts, uncles and cousins. His family and friends will be
celebrating his life at a graveside service on August 14, 2020 at 1 pm
at the Millinocket, Maine Cemetery. A gathering after the internment will
be at the Hillcrest Golf Club. David will be laid to rest at his Segee
Family Plot in Millinocket, Maine. In lieu of flowers please send a
donation to the high school scholarship fund of your choice.
