Millinocket – (FLAG) Dana E. McGowan, Sr. passed away Tuesday, May 22, 2018 at the age of 90. He was born January 4, 1928 in Millinocket, the son of Harry S. McGowan, Sr. and Myrtle (Gregory) McGowan.
Dana was a graduate of Stearns High School, class of 1946 and joined the Army Air Corps, serving in the Philippines and Guam.
Dana worked for the Great Northern Paper Company from the age of 16 until his retirement in 1987. He married his beloved wife Jean Bartlett on July 13, 1950 and they raised 4 children in the house he built. He enjoyed a long retirement and his many hobbies included wood working, gardening, and berry picking.
Dana’s greatest love was his family. He cherished his time with his immediate and extended family. Vacations were spent visiting relatives around New England and in Canada. More recently, his outings involved Thursday lunches out with nephews Larry and Bruce.
Dana was predeceased by his parents, his brothers, Harry Jr., James, Robert, and his sisters Helen Leavitt, Catherine Madore, and Dolores McGowan.
He is survived by his wife Jean; his children Linda Boynton, son Dana Jr. and wife Brenda, son Gary and wife Danette, and daughter Sarah McGowan; seven grandchildren, Melanie Carter, Sean McGowan, Jennifer Bissonnette and husband Matthew, Adam Boynton and wife Micky, Lindsay Beaulieu and husband Peter, Jason McGowan and wife Meredith, and Ryan McGowan and wife Felicia; seven great grandchildren, Alexis, Jonah, Kathryn, Rosalie, Joshua, Judah, and Wesley. He is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews, especially Bruce Leavitt, Scott Leavitt, Larry Slauenwhite, and Jimmy Slauenwhite.
Graveside services with military honors will be held 11 A.M. Saturday, June 2 at the Millinocket Cemetery. Gifts in memory of Dana may be sent to the Disabled American Veterans, 3725 Alexandria Pike, Cold Spring, KY 41076. Arrangements are by Lamson Funeral Home, Millinocket.
