Obituary for Bessie Mae Kelsey

Mattawamkeag - Bessie Mae Kelsey, 83, passed away unexpectedly on June 18, 2022. She was born in Mattawamkeag, Maine on December 25, 1938 to her mother, Helen Kelsey.
She attended Mattawamkeag schools and resided in Mattawamkeag her entire life. Early in life Bessie worked at a family owned business, Skips Take-Out. She was then employed by and retired from Haynes Oil Company (later C.N. Brown).
Bessie would always greet everyone with a sweet “hello” and a warm smile which resulted in her being affectionately known to many in the community as “Honey”. Bessie was very well known and respected in the community. Often times when there was a raffle, she was the top seller and everyone always knew where they could go for an update of what was going on around town.
Bessie had a zest for life and enjoyed the little things. She would frequently be seen yard saling or visiting with friends, but her real passion was caring for animals. She had many pets over the years and loved them all immensely. In fact, during her time at Skip’s Take-Out she often had her dog, Ginger by her side. Most recently she took great joy in helping to take care of two dogs that were very special to her, Lily and Bailey.
Bessie was predeceased by her mother, Helen Kelsey, two brothers, Philip Trueworthy, Victor “Skippy” Kelsey, many aunts’, uncles, and cousins. She was also predeceased by her very dear friends, Norman Eli Lee and Mary Lee. In addition, Bessie would not want us to forget to mention her loving dog, Buffy.
Bessie is survived by her cousin Barbie Fontaine and her husband Joe Fontaine along with their children Taylor and “Little Joe” and several other cousins, nieces and nephews. She is also survived by very special friends that she considered family. Those include Dale Ann Lee and Jeff “Jeffaroonie” Lane who she recently lived with up until her death; Kevin “Hatchet” Lee and his fiancé Celina Curtis along with their children, MacKenzie, Hunter and Alex; Travis and Kim Lee and their son Eli Lee.
Bessie will be missed by so many and will remain in our hearts forever. A graveside service and celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers please make a donation in Bessie’s name to the Penobscot Valley Humane Society, 1 Park Avenue Lincoln, ME 04457. Arrangements are by Lamson Funeral Home, Lincoln.
