Obituary for Albert S. "Al" Hughes Jr.

Millinocket - Albert “Al” Hughes, On Monday, September 12, our Dad went to be with his Lord and Savior while at home surrounded by his loving family.
Al was born July 11, 1929 in Newburyport, Massachusetts, the son of Albert Sargent Hughes Sr. And Mabel Griffin Hughes. He was a communicant of Christ the Divine Mercy Parish where for many years he proudly served as a Eucharistic Minister. Al was also a 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus and served as Grand Knight. Al was a member of the Millinocket Elks Lodge, American Legion, VFW, Fin & Feather Club and the Masons.
Al was a “people person” and was kind and helpful to everyone. He loved to engage folks in conversation, whether he knew them or not, on any topic under the sun. He enjoyed portraying Santa Claus for local children for many years. He was for a time a Little League coach as well.
He was a fixture at Studio One in Millinocket and at Houlton School of
Dance was known to students and parents alike as “Uncle Al.”
Al loved the outdoors, hunting, fishing, and especially sitting by the fire at his camp on Ambajejus Lake.
At eighteen, Al enlisted in the U.S. Army and subsequently served in the Korean War. Later, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served with the MCB12 Seabees in Vietnam, taking their “can do” motto to heart, helping to guide his life.
He worked for Great Northern Paper Company for over 30 years and after his “retirement” held many odd jobs in the community. Al, along with his wife Rena, organized the Padre Pio prayer group in Millinocket and at other parishes as well. They enjoyed traveling throughout Europe and the
Holy Land visiting many sacred shrines.
Along with his brother Arthur (“Bob”) Hughes of New Hampshire, Al is survived by his six children and spouses: Pamela White and husband “Dave” of East Millinocket, William Hughes of Waterville; Vickie Baron and husband Phil, Steve Hughes, Sandy Hartley and husband Ronald Jr., all from Millinocket, and Bruce Hughes and wife Jamilyn of Glenburn. Al is survived by eight grandchildren: Jonathan White and wife Erin of Overland
Park, Kansas; Mark White and partner Andy Joseph of Malden, Mass;
Derek Hartley and wife Olivia of South Portland; Zachary Hartley and
Katherine Alley of Glenburn; Jason Baron and wife Alisha of Ambajejus Lake; Greg Libby and wife Jessica of Titusville, Florida; Daniesha Hughes of Old Town; Baxter Hughes of Bangor and Cooper Hughes of Glenburn.
Al also leaves behind eight great grandchildren.
Along with many loving nieces and nephews, Al is survived by five in-laws: Ernest Santerre and wife Ann; Ernestine Quakenbush and husband Harold; Herbert (Joe) Santerre and wife Pat; Maryann St.Peter and husband Harold; Barbara Hughes of Lewiston and special sister-inlaw Mary Santerre of Millinocket.
Al was predeceased by his loving wife Rena of sixty-eight years; his parents; his sisters Pat Pelletier, Irma Milton and husband William; Rosemary Miller and brothers Eli, Jackie, Billie, and Roderick Miller; inlaws Herbert and Louise Santerre, Wilfred and wife Lorene Santerre, Richard Santerre and wife JoAnn, Clarence “Doc” Santerre, Delphis Santerre, Dorothy Raymond and husband Phil, Verna Charette and husband Guy, Irene Tapley and husband Wally, Florence Picard and husband Freddie and Roland “Babe” Beaulieu.
Our family would like to extend thanks to Beacon Hospice; Melissa, Amanda, Ashley for the care they provided for our father. We especially want to single out and thank dear friends Bruce Leavitt, Julie Gross, and Mary Booker for the personalized love, care, and comfort they provided our Dad.
Friends are invited to visit from 10:00-11:00 on September 24, 2022 at Christ the Divine
Mercy Parish, St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church 19 Colby Street Millinocket where a mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00am followed by an interment with Military Honors at the Millinocket Cemetery. We will continue to share love and fellowship in honor of Al’s life with a luncheon in the basement of St. Martin of Tours.
