Obituary for Augustine Chic - Betty Lee Mascetta

Augustine James “Chic” Mascetta, 96, passed away surrounded by his loving family on January 24, 2020 at home in Rockville, Maryland. Chic was born on August 21, 1923 in Millinocket, Maine, the eldest of five children born to Dennis and Beulah (Buccione) Mascetta. He graduated from Stearns High School in Millinocket, Maine in 1942. During his time at Stearns he played football and baseball, enjoyed the saxophone and even organized his own dance band. He went on to serve in the United States Navy from 1942-1946 as a gunner on oil tanker, USS H.L. Pratt, and as shore patrol in Cherbourg, France during World War II. After the war Chic attended Northeast Missouri State University where he met his future bride, Betty Lee Willcoxson. Chic and Lee were married May 29, 1950 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Ottumwa, Iowa. He went on to graduate with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. The young couple settled in Iowa and Chic worked as a Business Education Teacher at Pulaski High School in Pulaski, Iowa from 1952-1955. He then taught in Connecticut and upon returning to Iowa he was the owner and operator of Dairy Queen until 1962. A move to Rockville, Maryland led Chic to enjoy a long career in the field of real estate until he retired in 1994 along with his wife, Lee. Together, they were blessed to spend their retirement in the Florida warmth for over 25 years. Chic so enjoyed his time with his wife, Lee, and his wonderful daughter, Leanne, but the time spent with his two beautiful granddaughters, Madeline and Ava, were the most treasured moments of all.
Chic was predeceased by his parents; his brother, James Mascetta, of Burlington, MA; and his sister, Jean (Mascetta) Michaud, of Millinocket, ME. Chic’s legacy and love of life lives on through his family and friends. He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Betty Lee (Willcoxson) Mascetta, of Rockville, MD; his daughter Leanne Lunacek (Chris Hall) and her daughters, Madeline Lunacek and Ava Lunacek, of Rockville, MD; his sisters, Lucy Morgan and Barbara Mascetta (Su Carey), all of Lehigh Acres, FL; his aunt, Norma Mascetta, of Bangor, ME; along with many nieces and nephews whom Chic maintained a close relationship throughout his life.
In keeping with Chic’s faith and devotion to the Catholic Church, a celebration of life will be held on Saturday July 9, 2022 at 11:00 AM, St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church, Millinocket, Maine with a reception to follow.
